Program / Course Description

The Missouri Pet Grooming Apprenticeship is a registered, employer-based training program designed to prepare individuals for employment as professional pet groomers.

The program combines paid, on-the-job learning under the supervision of experienced groomers with related technical instruction covering animal handling and safety, grooming techniques, equipment use, workplace professionalism, and industry standards.

Apprentices develop practical skills while working in a salon environment and progressively assume increased responsibility as competencies are demonstrated. The program is structured to support entry-level workers, career changers, and individuals seeking a skilled trade pathway in the pet care industry.

Program Requirements / Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age (or higher if required by law)
  • Must be employed by a participating apprenticeship employer in an apprenticeable occupation

  Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, and reach
  • Ability to lift and handle animals and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Adequate range of motion and dexterity in arms, hands, and wrists

  Other Requirements:
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
  • Ability to safely handle animals of varying size and temperament
  • Valid driver’s license

Program Cost 

There is no upfront tuition cost to the apprentice. Training is provided through paid employment combined with employer-sponsored related technical instruction. Some employers may require apprentices to cover personal equipment or supplies, depending on salon policy.
